33 Weeks!!!

How far along? Today I am 33 weeks 1 day pregnant!  Holy smokes!  Only 48 days until my due date!

Baby size: 19 to 22 inches long and 4.9 lbs! He's getting huge!

Weight gain: I had an appointment last week immediately after eating breakfast and drinking my weight in water, so the scale was a little mean.  According to my scale, I am up 5.2 lbs from where I was when I found out I was expecting.

Cravings:  No cravings.  Honestly, I'd just be happy to be able to eat a meal.  The baby is squishing my insides and I can't eat an entire meal without feeling a bit ill.

Aversions: I smelled yogurt today.  It does not smell yummy yet.

Movement: My uterine tenant still thinks it's appropriate to dance all night long and shove his legs into my rib cage.

Sleep: I miss sleeping.  I can't fall asleep at night.  It's terrible.  I lay in bed and remember way back in my first trimester when I went to bed by 7PM.  It was amazing.  I've been napping more lately as a result.  It doesn't help that my nose gets stuff at night.  Only at night.  It's inconvenient.

August

I was looking through my photos on my computer and realized that there really aren't that many pictures of me.  I'm always the one behind the camera.  There are even less of me since I got my DSLR back in 2008.  Everyone is scared to touch it, so I'm in very few pictures.

Let's see what was going on in my life worth photographing during the month of August over the last several years...

2011 -- I'm pregnant!  Of course, you likely already knew that.  This is the only picture of me this month and it was taken on August 2nd.  Goodness, I think I'm twice that size now...

2010 -- The hubs and I drove down to St. Louis and stopped at the City Museum.  It was cool, but I'm not fond of climbing through metal cages 50' off of the ground.  I did go down a slide and run in a giant hamster wheel.

2009 -- This is the one and only time my parents have been to Illinois to visit us** so we took a short trip to Springfield and looked at Abraham Lincoln's house.  You can even see the capitol building and downtown behind us.

2008 -- I went to visit my friend Laura in Hannibal, Missouri, where we saw the Second City comedy troupe.  The people we saw that night were so funny.  Two of the girls were in a bunch of Sonic commercials.  Since I live in a city devoid of Sonic goodness, it made my day.

2007 -- I tried on a bunch of wedding gowns.  I did a lot of this.  This picture was taken at The Villager on Broadway in downtown Columbia, Missouri.

2006 --I was getting ready to start my third year of college and worked as a vendor rep for Hewlett-Packard.  Oh, who am I kidding?  I did as little as possible for $15 an hour.  My boss was based out of St. Louis, so I rarely saw her... which was probably a good thing.  This photo was taken around the time I quit my awful second job -- Toys R Us.

Here's how awesome it was to work at TRU:

Coworker: Hey, Marie-Etta, will you work for me Tuesday?
Me: Nope.

Fast-forward to Tuesday -- I had a voicemail from TRU asking where I was because my coworker said I was working for her.  HMM... Interesting, considering I had not only told her no, but had quit my job a week earlier.  Ahh.... the joys of retail.

**Dad has been out twice to help us move, but this is the only time my mom has come with him.

Brotherly Love

Re-Pete already loves his new baby brother.

So long as he isn't kicking.

32 Weeks

How far along? Today I am 32 weeks 1 day pregnant!

Baby size: 19 inches long and 4.5 lbs! He's getting huge!

Weight gain: I have an appointment on Wednesday, so we'll see what the scale says.

Cravings:  I'm not really having any, but I'm trying to convince myself that I'm craving fruits and vegetables.

Aversions: I still haven't been brave enough to try yogurt again.

Movement: I have a night owl living inside of me.  He seems to think it's acceptable to squirm around my belly all hours of the night.  I hope he gets his days and nights figured out once he starts breathing oxygen on his own.

Sleep: I'm having trouble getting comfortable enough to fall asleep.  Spending all of my time flipping from hip to hip isn't the most comfortable way to sleep.  I end up with pain in my left hip a lot of time.  Not cool.

Let me just say that I have had a pretty easy pregnancy so far, which I am very grateful for.  However, I have had one particularly unpleasant symptom off and on throughout my pregnancy.  It was actually one of the first symptoms I noticed before we got our positive home pregnancy test.

Now you want to know the symptom, don't you?  I don't normally talk about things like this.  There are certain things I like to keep to myself, but I wish someone had warned me about this particular symptom.

Ladies, I'm talking about constipation.

Glamorous, right?  It hasn't been a constant issue, but it has reared its ugly head now and then.  Apparently it can be a big problem in the third trimester because your intestines are no longer in their happy home in your abdomen.  Oh, no.  They are pushed around by your uterus and your squirmy baby.  Digestion is already slowed down, allowing you to absorb more water and nutrients from your waste.  Moving your intestines to new territory doesn't help.

So what's a girl to do?

I think my medical options are Metamucil and stool softeners.  Neither sound very appealing.  Instead, I drink boat loads of water and am adding as much fiber to my diet as possible.  Since dinner I have eaten a 3oz package of baby carrots and an 8oz jar of crushed pineapple.   That's only 16% of my recommended fiber intake for the day.

I am determined to win in the battle against my intestines.

Baby Gear

The list of things we need for the baby is growing smaller and smaller.  Today we bought a couple of the bigger items.

Our most important purchase of the day?

Our travel system!  I'm fairly certain the hospital won't discharge the baby unless we have a car seat, so this was an important purchase.  I like the colors.  There was a teal polka dot one that caught my eye, but it was $70 more.  Baby gear is expensive enough as it is.

We also picked up this swing!  We wanted one that you could turn the seat so that it could rock forward and backward or side to side.  Hopefully it's tall enough that the dogs won't try and jump into it with our little guy.  After seeing him sleep in the toy basket, it wouldn't surprise me to find Re-Pete in this.

Both items are already assembled.  We're hoping to get the dogs used to seeing them around so they can get their curiosity out of their systems.  We also want them to get used to the sounds the swing makes so that the baby can lounge in the swing without the dogs going nuts.  We'll see how that goes.

I assembled the travel system.  No, it was not difficult, but I'm proud of myself nonetheless.  I'm not sure what we're going to do with it until the baby gets here, though.  For now it's parked in the dining room.  Mike keeps asking the puppies if they want to try it out.  It was adorable watching him figure out how everything on it works.

So Comfy...

This is where I found Re-Pete snoozing Wednesday evening.  I lounged in there several times throughout the day on Thursday as well.  It is a basket full of dog toys.  The basket itself isn't very large, but with Re-Pete in it, it looks even smaller.  I don't think I've ever seen my little guy look so big.

Penelope doesn't appreciate seeing him in there.  She can't get to Mousie if Re-Pete is sitting on him.  As a result, she stands two feet from the basket and barks at him.

He doesn't seem to mind.

He's too comfy.

Where's My Stuff?

In yesterday's post, I talked about my wonderful shipment of cloth diapers that UPS delivered.  Before that, I had spent the morning checking the UPS website for clues as to when my packages would arrive.  Of course, the only information was "delivery by the end of the day," but I didn't let that stop me from checking every 30 minutes or so.  What if he stopped by while I was changing the laundry and didn't hear the doorbell?

So anyway...

I was checking early this morning on my Amazon order and saw the most peculiar thing...

Apparently my diapers were delivered 8 months ago in Birmingham, Alabama!  I thought it was a bit odd considering I had just placed my order on Monday, but whatever.  I guess even UPS has to recycle eventually.

Look What Santa Brought!

Today felt like Christmas.

No, it wasn't snowing, though that would be amaaaaazing.

Today felt like Christmas because the UPS guy dropped off a bunch of baby goodies!

YAY!!!

It was the rest of our cloth diaper stash.

I placed orders through Amazon and Cotton Babies late Monday night and both arrived today.  Here's a peek at what arrived today...

These are our small wet bags.  I ordered these on Amazon through Mommy's Touch, which I believe is a WAHM (work-at-home-mom) group.  So these are handmade somewhere here in America.  They have a zipper at the top and a loop if you needed to hang them up.  We'll be using these in our diaper bag when we are out and about.

Here's the Cotton Babies order.  On the left there are 6 bumGenius 4.0 pocket diapers.  They are currently running a promotion through the end of the month where you purchase 5 and get a 6th one for FREE.  The next row contains 8 Flip covers, which are on clearance for $9 each right now.  You can use these over a fitted diaper, a prefold, or with a Flip insert, which you can see on the bottom of the picture.  The brown squares are prefolds, which is what a lot of people imagine when they think of cloth diapers.

So there you have it.  That is the rest of our diaper stash.  All I need to do now is choose a detergent and I can begin to prep them.  I'll post a picture of our entire stash after that. :)

31 Weeks!

How far along? Today I am 31 weeks 1 day pregnant!

Baby size: 19 inches long and 3.9 lbs! He's getting so big!

Weight gain: I had a doctor's appointment last Thursday.  I hadn't gained any weight since my previous appointment (hooray!).  I am up 9 lbs from my first appointment at the end of February.  Of course, I'd already spent a month sleeping rather than eating, so my current weight is only 4 lbs higher than the day I found out we were expecting.

Cravings: I've been asking the Hubs to take me out for ice cream for almost a week, but he hasn't.  I decided to buy some Moose Tracks ice cream at the store today.  After a few bites, I didn't want it anymore.  It's going to take me a while to eat it all.

Aversions: The only food aversions I have experienced are yogurt related.  The smell made me want to throw up during my first trimester, which was no fun considering I used to eat yogurt each morning at breakfast.  It never actually made me vomit, but I haven't been brave enough to try it since February.

Movement: This kiddo moves so much!  It really is the coolest feeling.  He still likes to tickle my ribs with his toes.  I really enjoy seeing his feet moonwalk across the top of my stomach.

Sleep: I think my body is getting me ready for waking up with a baby.  I woke up around 1:30AM, having only been asleep for about four hours.  I didn't go back to bed until 6:30AM.  I wasn't a happy camper.  I did make the hubs French toast for breakfast, because I'm nice like that.  Other than that isolated incident, my only complaints about sleep is that I am tired of sleeping on my sides.  Each time I want to flip over, I wake up because I have to move my pillow and my growing belly.  I'll be happy to sleep on my tummy again.

We got so much done in the nursery this weekend!  By 'we' I really mean the hubs.  He was a rock star daddy yesterday.  He put together the second dresser as well as a cube storage shelf.  He also switched out the fugly old brass light fixture for a more modern one.  He then replaced the beige outlets with white ones.

Out with the old...

...and in with the new!

It's so nice having the dressers put together.  I've washed and folded lots of baby clothes this week and started organizing things in preparation for our little guy's arrival.  Our due date is 62 days from now, so he'll be here before we know it!

I Made Something Good!

If you lived in my house, the title to this post would not surprise you in the least.  I like to bake cookies and I like to try new recipes, but they don't always turn out very well.  I am not the best cook.  I left my parents' home knowing how to make macaroni and cheese (from a box), scrambled eggs, and Hamburger Helper.  I've been working on my skills ever since.

The other day I found this great recipe for a Sausage and Cheese Calzone over on Cooking with Chrissy's blog.  It sounded simple enough, so I decided to give it a try.  I even used her pizza dough recipe.  Since the Hubs worked at a pizza place in college, I let him roll out the dough to the appropriate size.  He even stuck around to eat extra pepperoni put on the toppings.  We used turkey pepperoni instead of sausage, though I think that sausage and pineapple would have been amazing, too.

Ours turned out a lot better than I had expected.  The Hubs really liked it and even took leftovers to work the next day.  I was so impressed with myself* that I even took a picture**.  I'm a horrible photographer, but I'll share it anyway.

*I must be a terrible cook if this impressed me.
**Yes, we cooked our calzone on parchment paper.  We rolled the dough out on it and I couldn't figure out how to take it off without destroying our hard work.

Accidental Gardening

Remember the flower boxes my father-in-law made me last year?  Thanks to my pregnancy, my desire to do any gardening this year has been pretty low.  I wasn't feeling motivated this spring and then it got really hot outside.  As a result, the boxes have remained empty.

Fast-forward to June.  We were installing our new garage door and I noticed there were wave petunias growing by the porch.  They weren't very big, but I decided to water them occasionally because they're so pretty.

What's most interesting about these flowers is that petunias are annuals.  They have to be replanted each year if you want them to come back.  Apparently, though, they seed themselves and pop up in other places.  We have a small wave petunia growing on the side of our house as well.

Here are last year's petunias.  These flowers taught me a lot about soil quality for planters.

...and here are this year's flowers:

It's HUGE!

Not only that, but the blooms aren't all the same color.  I think that's the most interesting part.  There is such a variety in the bloom shades.

I'd also like to point out that these are the only plants thriving in our yard this year.  We need rain.  Serious rain.  Need proof?

This is our crunchy back yard.  :(

30 Weeks!!!

How Far Along: 30 weeks 1 day... I am 75% of the way through my pregnancy!  Holy cow!

Size of baby: This week the WTE application on my phone, our little man is 18" long and weighing in at a staggering 3.2 lbs!
Total Weight Gain/Loss:  I avoid the scale.  I know Dr. M. will tell me at my appointment on Thursday.  I had cake and cookies this weekend, so it may not be pretty.
Maternity Clothes: I am loving jersey knit dresses.  I picked one up at Target the other day and it is SO comfortable.  It's not a maternity dress, so you'd better believe I'll be wearing it next summer.

Sex: It's a boy!
Movement:  He's currently head down.  I felt him flip over three weeks ago.  It was quite uncomfortable.  Anyway, now I get to feel tiny baby feet pedaling across the top of my abdomen.  It's like he's moonwalking.

Sleep:  I love sleep!  However, when I wake up at 2AM to use the bathroom, some nights I can't fall back asleep for nearly an hour.  I guess my body is getting me ready for waking up to feed our little one.

Cravings: Hummus!  I made my own last week and it was SO yummy.

Symptoms: This week hasn't been too bad.  Once in a while he'll stretch out and it gets a bit uncomfortable, but I know it's nothing compared to what it will be like in the next couple of months!

I passed my 3-hour glucose tolerance test.  Hooray!  What's really interesting is that I passed with flying colors, even though I failed the one hour screen.  Oh well, at least I don't have gestational diabetes!

Weekend Planning

My Happy House and A Life in Progress are hosting a blog hop this weekend.  You should check out their blogs, I really enjoy them.

If you've read my blog for any length of time, you know that I am a planner.  I like to know what's going to happen and I like to make lists.  I like to feel as though I have some semblance of control over things.

I think it's my Type A personality.

I find that having a plan comes in handy when you're getting your house ready for a shindig, which is what I've been doing all week.  My house is looking pretty good, but there are still a few things left to accomplish before my baby shower tomorrow afternoon.  Here's what I hope to do this weekend:

Friday

-- Bake cookies for my shower.  These are going to be sugar cookie sandwiches with colored icing.  Yummy!

-- Spot clean my carpet.  They could really use to be shampooed, but I'm trying to put that off until closer to the birth of our child.

-- Pick up my pay stub and sign up for hours at work.

Saturday

-- Dust, vacuum, and mop the house

-- Set up for my party with Jana

-- Enjoy my baby shower!

Sunday

-- Put away and organize any gifts that I receive.

-- Work on sewing Christmas gifts for our two older nephews

-- Grill chicken so that the hubs has lunch for Monday and Tuesday

-- Attend a worship service (we're looking for a church)

What will you accomplish this weekend?

New Toys

We don't often buy new toys for our dogs.  They have a basket full of toys and they only play with their favorites.  If you throw one that they don't care for, they may chase it, but once they get there they'll stop and look at you as if saying, "What do I do with this?"

Last night, however, we took a trip through the pet aisles at Target.  I was hoping to stumble across a magical brush that prevents any and all shedding.  Mike, of course, looked at the toys.  I was wandering through the last pet aisle when he came up to me with a toy in his hand, insisting that the dogs would love it (he picks out most of their toys).  It was a skunk with no stuffing.  I immediately liked it, especially since I've spent the last week trying to clean up Moosy's* insides after his leg was ripped off.

Mike also happened across a bed in the cat aisle that he thought the dogs would love.  Chihuahuas like to burrow in small, dark places, such as under blankets or their crates.  It's not a large bed and I thought it'd be funny to see them fight over it, at the very least.

So we paid for our pet purchases and headed home.

Wally immediately claimed Skunky as his own.  I've never seen his fluffy butt move so fast as it did when I'd throw that toy across our house.  He was determined to get it before Penelope.**  Skunky has crinkle material in the legs and Wally loved shaking it and hearing the noise.  That's what he's doing in the photo above.

He also realized that Penelope couldn't get the toy away from him if he took it into the new dog bed (he's easily distracted, at which point Penelope would snatch the toy away).  Until we put their blanket in it, the dogs wouldn't go into the bed.  They would stand outside and streeeeetch as far into as they could while still being on the carpet.  Fortunately, they like it now, and there is generally one dog napping in there at any given time.

Before any of them would nap in it, Penelope had to investigate.  Here she is digging their blanket out of it.  We aren't sure if she thought something interesting was in there or what, we were too busy laughing to worry about it.

She then decided if she couldn't play with the toy, she would guard the entrance to the new bed so that Wally couldn't take Skunky inside.  Each time he tried she would growl at him and stand in front of the door.

Playing with their new toy probably went on for a solid 30 minutes before the dogs were worn out.  By the end they were panting and moving at a much slower pace.  As soon as I stopped throwing Skunky, they were passed out.

*The dogs favorite toys all have names.  Penelope knows their names and will bring you the appropriate toy.  The ones with names are Moosy (a moose), Mousy (a mouse), Ball, and Skunky.  I know, the names are really creative.

**Re-Pete doesn't play with toys.  My parents' cranky Yorkie didn't like to share toys when he was a puppy, so he is content to snuggle on my lap while the other dogs play with the toys.

Just Because...

It's been a while since I posted an updated bump shot, so I took one today.  And because you guys are so great, I thought I'd share it with you.

The third trimester seems to be a time of exponential belly expansion.  During the first and second trimesters I felt like I looked exactly the same for weeks at a time.  Now, though, I'll wake up and discover that the clothes I wore just last week no longer cover my bump.

Strangers even ask (though sometimes cautiously) when my baby is due.

And just for comparison, here I am at 10 weeks and 29 weeks.  It's amazing how much our little guy has grown in 19 weeks!

29 Weeks

How Far Along: 29 weeks 1 day

Size of baby: This week the WTE application on my phone, our little man is 17" long and weighing in at a staggering 3.1 lbs!

Total Weight Gain/Loss:  I was up 4 lbs at my last appointment.  Dr. M didn't get a chance to lecture me due to my tears.

Maternity Clothes: It's time to go shopping.

Sex: It's a boy!

Movement:  He moves. All. The. Time.  Last night I actually could not fall asleep because he was moving so much.

Sleep:  I couldn't fall asleep last night thanks to the kiddo.  I love all of the kicks and punches, but not when I need to be asleep!

Cravings: It's still cereal.

Symptoms: Raging heartburn!  It was so bad the other night when I went to bed.  I sleep better on my left side, but when I rolled that direction, stomach acid came rushing into my throat.  I thought smoke and fire would come out of my mouth if I tried to speak.  My bottle of sugar free Tums is my new best friend.

I did my 3 hour Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT) this morning.  Fasting was difficult.  I poured Mike a bowl of Cheerios instead of cooking breakfast so I wouldn't have to smell the yummy breakfast food.  I arrived at the hospital at 6:30 to start my test.  I was convinced I was going to fail the test.  It was a long three hours. Fortunately, I got to spend one of those hours visiting with Ms. Nellie.  I used to care for her before she moved to the nursing home area of the hospital.  She kept trying to share her biscuits and gravy with me.  She's my favorite 95 year old gal.

I finally got my results at 3PM today....

I passed!

Last week must have been a fluke, because I drank twice as much of the glucose drink and my blood sugar didn't go as high.  I'm SO thankful that I don't have gestational diabetes.  I was having nightmares about birthing a 16 lb baby like that lady on the news!
