So dog-gone cute!

Pin It Now!

My charming husband took this photo a few weeks ago while we were home for my birthday. He's a little silly, so I can imagine him saying things like 'work it' and 'great shot' during his little photo session with the pooches.

When I first saw this photo, the first thing out of my mouth was 'What is Wally trying to say?' Any ideas?

Fat Friday

Pin It Now!
I know, it's not the nicest title, but it fits, okay?

I woke up this morning and had my first official weigh-in (after my initial weigh-in, of course) and am happy to report the results here!

Starting Weight: 206.6 lbs

Current Weight: 202.6 lbs

Total: Loss of 4 lbs!

Starting BMI: 30.5 (obese)

Current BMI: 29.9 (overweight)

Whoo!

I realize that this is mostly because I ate less this week and made slightly more healthy eating choices. I didn't make it to the gym once. I also realize that not all weeks will have numbers that high (bummer!). I would love it if I could continue each week with a 1 to 2 lb loss, though any loss is great!

To Sarah, thank you SO much for the comment you left last night. I needed it! Talking about how I need to lose weight and that I lost 4 lbs this week is one thing, but posting my weight was one of the scariest things I've done lately. Your comment really helped make me feel better about my decision to be open and honest!

And to all of the other people who have commented so far -- THANK YOU!

Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes

Pin It Now!
I had a wake-up call the other day.

Michael and I like watching the show Biggest Loser. We watch it together each week. Watching a show about health and fitness week after week after week puts ideas in my head. One week they were talking about how they got the size they did. They said they didn't realize they were the size they were until they got huge. It got me wondering just how big I've gotten in the last several years. I stepped on the scale for the first time in quite some time and was shocked at the number I saw. When did that happen? It was 20 lbs heavier than I was when I became engaged in February 2007.

Wow.

Then I decided to open one of those generic BMI calculators. I put in my height. I plugged in the awful number that popped up on the scale. I clicked 'calculate.' I had a small stroke. Obese? Are you kidding me? It was barely in the obese category, but it was still obese.

It was then and there that I decided that something had to be done. If I want to think about having children in a few years, they deserve to start their lives in a healthy environment, not the chunky body I have right now.

So I made a chart.

I'm big on charts. When I tried to lose weight for the wedding, I had success with my charts. One one chart I had dates. Weigh-in dates. I would weigh myself the same morning each week as soon as I woke up and would record it on my chart. I also had a second chart. Last time it had stars on it. If I had lost weight from the previous weigh-in, I would color in that many stars on my chart. It was so awesome to see the stars fill up and I quickly lost 12 lbs.

I've employed the same system for this. I have chose Friday as my weigh-in day. I've also decided that, in the hopes of being more successful, I'm going to be going posting about this. If I am open and honest about everything, I can't pretend that everything is fine and that I'm not... obese.

Last Friday was my first weigh-in. I'll be posting the results of tomorrow's weigh-in after I get home from work. It is really hard for me to talk about all of this and to post it out there for the world to see, but I realize that while the strength to overcome my bad eating habits and lack of exercise comes from within myself, I cannot do this alone. I will need help. I will need support.

So in an effort to be open and honest and put myself out there for the world and to be vulnerable, I've decided to post my starting weight. I thought about this for a long time. I thought about waiting until I'd lost 15 or 20 lbs and then posting what I had started at, but I wouldn't really be open about my weight from the start, would I? So I decided that the honesty had to start at the beginning. It helps that I told someone how much I weigh and they didn't believe me.

On February 20, 2009, my weight was 206.6 lbs.

EEK! I know. It's a scary number. I cannot believe that my weight starts with the number two. I always lied to myself and said that as long as I was under 200, everything was fine. Well, it's not fine! It's bad. Very bad. My BMI is 30.4. Ugh. So I'm working on it. I'm working on being a new me. Well, I'll still be me, but in a healthier, leaner body.

I do not expect great results tomorrow. I did not make it into the gym at all this week. I did, however, spend the last two days cleaning, but I'm not so sure that it counts as cardio. I did eat better and I ate less than normal.

So we'll see.

Wedding Survey

Pin It Now! Here's a wedding survey I swiped from Facebook. I have nothing of real value to post about today (unless you want to hear about the success of the PedEgg on my husband's feet).

1. When did you get married?
June 21, 2008

2. Where was your wedding? Where was your reception?
The ceremony was at First Baptist Church and the reception was at the local country club.

3. How long were you engaged?
16 months

4. Where was your rehearsal dinner?
First Baptist Church

5. How many bridal showers did you have?
Just one bridal shower in late March

6. How many people were in your wedding party?
3 bridesmaids, 3 groomsmen, 2 ushers, ring bearer and flower girl

7. What color did your bridesmaids wear?
Black

8. Did you see your husband before the ceremony?
Nope. I was trapped in the basement.

9. What was the weather like on your wedding day?
Bright and sunny! I was worried it'd be really humid, but it was a perfect day!

10. What kind of flowers were in your bouquet?
Red roses

11. What were your "something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue?
Old -- a ring I swiped from my mom
New -- My gown!
Borrowed -- I borrowed my crinoline from Channy
Blue -- My socks. Yes, I said SOCKS!

12. Did you light a unity candle?
Yes. I obviously wasn't thinking clearly because, rather than just pick up the entire thing, I pulled my candle out of the holder.

13. Did you cry during your wedding?
I cried in the last few minutes while waiting to go upstairs. All of the emotion hit me at once. I cried a little going down the aisle, but didn't cry during the wedding. Everyone was surprised. I cried through the rehearsal dinner.

14. Where did you buy your wedding gown?
In CoMO at David's Bridal

15. What was your first dance song?
'I Cross My Heart' by George Strait

16. What flavor was your wedding cake?
White!

17. Did you smash cake in each other's face or were you "nice"?
A little bit. I mouthed 'be nice' to my new husband, which prompted him to squish cake. Before he got too carried away, I pushed him away with my piece.

18. Did you freeze the top layer of your cake and eat it on your first wedding anniversary?
We did save the top tier. Ask again in June if we ate it!

19. When did you open your wedding gifts?
The next morning at my parents' house.

20. Where did you go on your honeymoon?
What honeymoon?

My First Award!

Pin It Now!

Check it out! You know what that is? It's my first award. Yup, someone (Lynsey) reads my blog and actually likes it enough that they thought I deserved one. Woo-hoo! I've been blogging since November 2007 and this is my first award. It's pretty exciting. Each day I am amazed to see just how many people read and comment on my blog (comments are awesome, keep 'em coming!) and receiving this award is no exception.

When I began my blog 15 months ago, I thought I was just going to be talking about my wedding and what I was doing to get ready for it. Since then, it has become my little window to the world. When the puppies were born, my mom started telling other people about it. Since then my comments have slowly started to creep up. I love coming home from work and finding an inbox full of notices that people have something to say about what I write!

But here's what I need from you, readers: I need ideas! I've been slowly posting about the wedding, which is great, but I need other things to post about. It's been too cold to go outside and take photographs of anything and we're not doing a whole lot besides lounge around at home. I have a new idea for my Friday postings, which you'll find out about later this week. I am open to suggestions. If you have any ideas for blog topics, leave a comment about it today!

Now onto paying it forward...

Here are the rules: “These blogs are exceedingly charming. These kind bloggers aim to find and be friends. They are not interested in self-aggrandizement. Our hope is that when the ribbons of these prizes are cut, even more friendships are propagated. Please give more attention to these writers. Deliver this award to eight bloggers who must choose eight more and include this cleverly-written text into the body of their award."

And the winners are (drumroll, please)...

1. Laura at The Horton Family

2. Sarah at Just a Bit of Silliness, Really

3. Melissa at Simple. Positive. Happy.

4. Tristan at Tristan*Time

5/6. Aimee at Waters World and Super Fat Super Chick

7. Megan at So, Now What?

8. Adriana at Life After College

As Seen On TV

Pin It Now!
Have you ever seen an infomercial and felt the urge to purchase the product? Then later you're at the store and see the product but are too embarrassed to buy it? It happens to me all of the time. First there was the Magic Bullet. Have you seen that one? If you've seen any part of the infomercial, you've seen it a dozen times. Then there was the Aero Garden. How great would it be to have fresh herbs growing on your counter?

For the last year or so, I've been seeing the Ped Egg on television and in stores. How great does this product look? You can go from dry, cracked feet to smooth, silky feet with just a few passes of the ergonomically-shaped vessel. Plus, it's gentle enough that it won't break a balloon!

Lately, my feet have been looking a little ho-hum. After placing an order for all of my new flip flops, I realized that my feet are not ready for summer. They are in need of some serious help. Before dropping a bunch of money on an amazing pedicure, I thought I would try a few home remedies. No amount of lotion has helped, nor has my wimpy little pumice stone. It was time to break out the big guns.

I made a pit stop on my way home from work yesterday. I purchased the Ped Egg. I know, it's silly. I felt a little foolish buying it, but if it helps, whatever, right? I was anxious to know if it worked, but a little nervous about trying it on my own feet. My darling husband (to whom I have been officially married for 8 months now) was my guinea pig. After a couple of minutes, he admitted that he felt nothing and I could see that it was making progress. I decided to use it on my own feet.

I am happy to report that the dry skin on my feet is going away! As silly as those 'As Seen On TV' products are, it is nice to find one that actually works. If my feet look amazing for summer, it will definitely be worth the $10 I spent!

Work Related

Pin It Now!
I don't like to post specific things about my blog for many reasons. While I feel that I should be able to say what I want on my own blog, it isn't really the appropriate outlet for such frustrations. A couple of people at work know about my little slice of the Internet and I would hate for something to be taken the wrong way and put my job in jeopardy.

I do, however, have some general things that irritate me on a somewhat daily basis that I have compiled into a list for your enjoyment.

Things at work that irk me:

~ Employees who completely disregard the dress code, which is already pretty laid back.

~ Customers who are incapable of correctly reading pricing labels.

~ People who see a clean bathroom and decide to do unmentionable things to dirty them up.

~ Employees who cut corners with everything, leaving you to clean up the pieces.

~ People who steal and then try to return said pilfered goods.

~ Employees who have horrible attitudes.

~ Managers who don't back you up when you attempt to dole out consequences for breaking the rules.

~ People who only follow the rules when it's convenient for them.

~ Customers who sit plastic bottles full of chew spit on the counter in front of you. Yes, this happened to me. Yes, I almost threw up on him.

~ People who are late.

This is, obviously, is incomplete, but I don't want to overwhelm anyone!

New Vacuum!

Pin It Now!
I love this machine!

As most of the country knows, Circuit City has recently met their retail demise. Fortunately for me, the consumer, this translated into great deals on products I like. Michael bought me a tripod for my camera at a great discount and I got the beautiful machine pictured above!

I wasn't even in the market for a new vacuum cleaner. At least, I didn't know I was. I got my machine for 40% off (it was even in the box!). I got home and quickly put it together, excited to clean my carpets. I used it for a couple of minutes and then decided to check the can that holds the dirt. I was shocked at what I saw. It had picked up a lot of dust bunnies, dirt, and hair. So I guess my old machine wasn't working as well as I thought. Oh well, I have a great machine now!

25 Random Things: Part 3

Pin It Now!
11. I have been driving the same car since I was 16. It isn't my first car, but I have been driving it for almost seven years now. While I would love to have a new car, I really enjoy not having a car payment.

12. I did color guard in high school. It was probably one of the things I enjoyed the most. I did it all four years. During my sophomore year, I was the co-captain for the squad and then captain my junior and senior years. I wish I would have gone on to do it in college.

13. In the 2nd grade, a piece of artwork I did featuring a marching band was put on display in the state capital in Jefferson City. On the day my family drove up to see it, they had just taken them down.

14. I'd love to live in the country outside of a small town in the Midwest. I'd just need a Wal-Mart, Target, Hobby Lobby, and JoAnn's five minutes down the road.

15. In the summer of 2006, I lived by myself in a large, two bedroom townhouse. It was a great summer. I had two jobs and took summer classes. The strange thing was, I had very little furniture. I had my bedroom furniture and a kitchen table. Even though the living room and second bedroom were completely empty, it was serious the best time I have ever had living by myself.

"Problem"

Pin It Now!
Being overweight, shopping for clothes isn't the most enjoyable thing. However, I really love shopping for shoes and handbags. Those are two things that always fit.

Every summer, I buy several pair of flip flops from Old Navy. I love, love, love their flip flops. First and foremost, they're dirt cheap. Hello? 2 for $5! It's great. Second, they come in fun, bright colors. I wear them everywhere. Buying groceries, walking the dog, getting the mail, you name it. Within two months, the shoes are ready to go in the garbage. At $2.50 a pair, I don't feel bad tossing them out.

Each year, I head over to Old Navy to pick up some shoes. For some reason, they never seem to have the colors I want in my size. So this year, I decided to take matters into my own hands.

I ordered them online.

I ordered one in each color.

I just ordered fourteen pair of flip flops. For myself.

I also ordered three or four for my wonderful husband. But oh my gosh. Fourteen! I won't have to buy another pair of flip flops for at least two summers. I absolutely cannot wait until they're delivered!

In similar news, I need to upgrade my wardrobe. I looked down today and realized I was wearing a Mizzou shirt. Not a big deal, except I've worn one each day for the last eight days. I need to get out there and buy some spring-like clothing.

Anyone else need an update?

25 Random Things: Part 2

Pin It Now!
6. I am one of the least-patient people I know. It's true, I hate to wait. I gave my husband his Valentine's Day card five days ago because I was tired of seeing it sit around in the envelope. He isn't very patient either, though. We never have gifts to open from each other on Christmas morning because we've already opened them all. I actually received my new digital camera in October. We've vowed to try harder next year, though.

7. I hide vegetables in food. My husband claims to hate tomatoes, green peppers, and onions. One day, I was making something that called for stewed tomatoes. Knowing how much he loooooves tomato, I pulled out my tiny food chopper and made the tomato tiny. I also did this with both green pepper and onion in the same dish. Near the end of dinner, he told me that he liked the food. This just verified what I already knew: he didn't hate the taste. Around Christmas, I finally admitted that I was hiding vegetables in his food. I expected the worst, but was shocked by his reaction. He was fine with it, so long as I continued to not tell him when I did it!

8. The names for the litter of puppies we had in October were not random. I wanted to have a theme with the names, but couldn't decide on one. Finally I decided on nuts. When Penelope was tiny, sometimes I called her 'Peanut' because of her size. Knowing how tiny the puppies would be, I decided to give them similar names. Al for almond, Hazel for hazelnut, and Wally for walnut.

9. I probably rearrange my furniture more than is socially acceptable. Take today, for example. I'm cleaning our bedroom (for the record, we've been a bit busy, so our apartment has been suffering) and decide to clean out the closet, under the bed, and around all of the furniture. I decided that since I was already moving things around, I might as well put things in new places. It happens often, especially with our living room and the guest room, which rarely gets used.

10. I like to be right; that's how I roll!

My Birthday

Pin It Now!
I'm finally posting the photos from my birthday last week. We sort of began celebrating on Wednesday, the day before my birthday. We had watched a show on bbq a few days earlier and were craving some. Unfortunately, we aren't anywhere near Kansas City (or Buckingham's, our favorite place to eat), so we had to make do with the inferior smoked meats of central Illinois.

Afterward, we headed across the street to Wal-Mart. I don't remember exactly why we went, but Michael ended up buying me birthday cupcakes. While I was a couple of aisles over, he also secretly picked out a card for me.

When we arrived home, Michael decided that it wasn't a birthday "cake" unless there were candles involved. I thought he would come around the corner holding a cupcake with a single candle sticking out. Boy, was I wrong! When I looked, my poor cupcake appeared to be in flames from the twenty-three candles he had shoved in it.

He then made me pose for a photo while candle wax dripped all over my cupcake and Fiesta plate.

We spent the weekend following my birthday in Missouri with our family. For as long as I can remember, my grandpa and I have had dinner together sometime around our birthdays, which are two days apart. Even though Michael and I are living far from home, it was important to me that I spend my birthday with my grandpa.

Sorry for the lack of posts this week. It has been a crazy week at work, so when I come home, I just want to sit around and do nothing!

25 Random Things: Part 1

Pin It Now!
For the last two weeks, the '25 Random Things' note has been circulating around Facebook. I finally decided to do my own list. However, I want to think of really good things, which is going to take me a while. Instead, I'm going to do it in installments. Plus, if I do it this way, I can include little stories and photos, which Facebook will not.

1. As a child, I had intense lilapsophobia (fear of tornadoes) and astraphobia (fear of thunderstorms). I had more than one panic attack at school. There were times I would actually vomit and have to be sent home. Whenever it would begin to get stormy, the only place I felt safe was in my bed under the covers.

I haven't had a panic attack since the 8th grade, though I still get nervous when experiencing severe weather in new places. Because of my anxiety, I was obsessive about learning all that I could during weather units in school. I once told my mother to take a different way home because of a cloud I saw. Five minutes later, we heard on the radio that the way we would have been going was under a tornado warning.

2. I can't see. My eyesight is incredibly poor. In the 7th grade, I noticed that the chalkboard was suddenly blurry, so my mother took me to the eye doctor. For the next two years, I wore my glasses whenever I needed to see far away. In the 9th grade, I began wearing them all the time. For Christmas my sophomore year of high school, my parents paid for me to get contact lenses. It was love at first sight. Literally! I wear my glasses occasionally now to let my eyes breathe. People are always surprised to see me wearing spectacles. They're even more surprised when they put my glasses on and see just how blind I am!

My old glasses

My current glasses

3. I almost broke my knee on a float trip. In July 2007, we took a trip to the Niangua River in southwest Missouri. I was having a tough time figuring out left and right on the canoe. We flipped our canoe on a pile of brush in the river. When I fell from the boat, I hit my leg on a log. I had scratches all over both legs and a huge goose egg on my knee.

4. I have a younger brother, but always wished that I also had a sister. I know plenty of ladies who have a great relationship with their sisters and have always envied them. When I married my husband, I was excited because I gained three sisters-in-law. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll ever be close to any of them and it makes me sad.

5. I got married young, but that doesn't mean I'm in a hurry to have babies. We are not planning on having children for several years. When we go home and visit family, there are always several people who ask when I'm going to become pregnant. Sorry to disappoint everyone, but you'll just have to be patient!

Stay tuned for Part 2!

Babies!

Pin It Now!
This is Gwen. She is five weeks old. She is cute. She sleeps. A lot.

My mother and I had the opportunity to watch her Saturday morning. She arrived asleep and remained that way for an hour and a half. Now, for two grown women who squeal with glee at the sight of infants, a sleeping baby is not the most exciting thing.

So we took pictures.

We took pictures of toes.

We took pictures of cheeks.

And when she couldn't take any more photo-taking, we took more photos.

Wally loved the baby, too. While I was holding her, he came up and sat on my lap with her. When sitting in front of her was not enough, he wiggled under he legs and snuggled up with her. I'm not sure what his motives were, but I like to think that he just liked the baby so much that he needed to be near her, not that he was jealous and was trying to usurp his spot on my lap.

Cheesy Beef Spirals

Pin It Now!
I found a great new recipe last week. I like casseroles. I have no idea why. It's so nice to just throw a bunch of ingredients into the dish, pop it in the oven, and you're good to go. They make for great leftovers, too.

Last night I made a recipe called Cheesy Beef Spirals. The dish has easy-to-find ingredients and went together quickly. Oh, did I mention the cheese? It is cheesy. Very cheesy. And yummy.

Cheesy Beef Spirals
  • 2 cups uncooked spiral pasta
  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 2 small onions, chopped
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 jar (26 ounces) spaghetti sauce
  • 1 jar (4-1/2 ounces) sliced mushrooms, drained
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 pound process cheese (Velveeta), cubed
  • 2 cups (8 ounces) shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese

Directions:

Cook pasta according to package directions. Meanwhile, in a large saucepan, cook the beef, onions and garlic over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Stir in spaghetti sauce and mushrooms; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 20 minutes.

Place 1/2 cup of meat sauce in a greased shallow 2-1/2-qt. baking dish. Drain pasta; place half over sauce. Top with half of the remaining meat sauce; spread with sour cream. Top with process cheese and remaining pasta and meat sauce. Sprinkle with mozzarella cheese.

Cover and bake at 350° for 25-30 minutes. Uncover; bake 5-10 minutes longer or until bubbly.

Yield:
8-10 servings.

The Guys

Pin It Now!

This is my gorgeous groom before the wedding. He doesn't look nervous at all! He once joked that he tried to go out the backdoor (the room they got ready in was next to the door), but I don't think he was serious.

Michael and his best man, Ty. If they look goofy, it's because they are.

Michael and Wade. They've been friends for-e-ver.

Michael and Colt. Colt has sweet dancing skills. He's a marine. And single. Any takers?

All of the guys. They went bowling the night before the wedding. There was dancing and drinking. Boys are silly.

We Are Not Moving

Pin It Now!
Remember the big announcement last month?

Erase it from your memory.

That's right, we didn't get the house. The first time we felt like we might not get the house was the day of the inspection. The two big problems that popped up were big ones. It turns out that the roof was older than we were told. A lot older. The inspector guessed that it was 20-25 years old (we were told it was five).

Not only that, it was also leaking.

Not only was it leaking, but there was a bucket in the attic to catch the water.

I was pretty bummed out when Steve the inspector told me about the roof. I didn't think that things could get any worse. Of course, it's when you have this thought that things do, in fact, get worse.

In the basement, Steve looked at the furnace for a long time. It was from the late 80's. You hear of older furnaces working just fine, but the way Steve talked about this one, I knew that wasn't the case. It turns out that the heat exchange was cracked, which meant the furnace was done. So done that there was a major risk of carbon monoxide leaking from it when turned on.

I called Michael with the bad news. We agreed that we were not going to pay for either of the pricey repairs. I called our realtor to let her know of the findings. She told me what we needed to do from there. We had three business days to ask the seller to make the appropriate repairs.

Wednesday afternoon, I met with our realtor and submitted our quotes and requests. By this point, Michael and I weren't feeling as good about the house as we had before the inspection. Not only did the house need more work than we expected, but we began to question whether or not we wanted to continue living in the town the house is located in.

By Thursday night, we wanted out. Michael called our realtor and let her know. She told him that the seller didn't seem eager to replace the roof, so that may be our way out. All we could do was wait until Monday afternoon.

Monday afternoon, we both heard from the realtor. The seller had chosen not to make either repair and asked us to purchase the house as-is. If we hadn't already decided we didn't want the house, we would have been upset. Instead, we've been giving a lot of thought about moving to a new city. When we moved here, I wasn't finished with school. I am eager to get back to school. Not getting this house feels like a sign that we need to go someplace where I can start classes again.

A few days ago when we were first talking about not buying the house, I was incredibly upset. I really wanted to delete the posts with all of the photos. I have since changed my mind. I am at peace with the fact that we are going to continue to rent for who knows how long. It may be a buyer's market, but I think we're going to wait until the economy perks back up before making any huge purchases.

I'm Scrappy!

Pin It Now!
I've finally started my long-awaited scrapbook! I've been telling Michael for a few months now that I'd like to start a scrapbook of our lives. A week ago, I finally went to Hobby Lobby and purchased the necessary supplies.

My pages are nothing compared to other, serious scrapbookers. My pages are somewhat plain and I feel the need to cram as many photos on each page as physically possible. I started with Christmas and began working backward. Hopefully I can keep making progress and stay caught up with things that are happening now. After two days of scrapbooking, I've made it to our wedding, which is going to take up many pages. What I really like about doing this is that with each new page, I relive the memories. Thinking about the details of our wedding makes me so happy.

Here's a page I did last week.

Sorry for the short post today. I have some important posts to make this week, so keep checking back!
