Weekend Recap

Pin It Now!

Here's a picture of my lovely husband showing off his skills on the miniature golf course. We had an enjoyable weekend with Ty and Colt. It's always great when family and friends can make the trip out here to visit.

This is me, attempting to stay cool in the shade. The heat on Saturday was ridiculous and we quickly made our way to the pool after 18 holes of mini-golf.

Is it really almost August?

Someone introduced me to Scrapblog the other day. It allows you to upload photos and make digital scrapbook pages. For those of you nervous about scrapbooking, whether it be about the demand on your time or the chunk it takes out of your wallet, this is for you! Scrapblog is free and has anything you would want in a real scrapbook without the glue and glitter.

As you can see, I'm not very good. This is maybe the third page I've made. I was just goofing around to see what kind of cool features the website offered. It has tons of editing tools and is really easy to use.

Tomorrow is Michael's birthday! My husband is growing up! *sniff sniff* Just kidding. I don't know if we'll do anything too exciting to celebrate. I am planning a delicious dinner for the two of us, but other than that it will be low-key.

Too Cute for Words!

Pin It Now!

Re-Pete

Penelope

Okay, so I made that up, there are plenty of words that I could use when talking about my babies. I haven't posted pictures of them in a while, so I thought that I would do so today. They're being so well-behaved this morning. They ran around being crazy for a little while earlier, but they must have worn themselves out, because they are both snoozing away in the living room.

In other news, we're having guests this weekend! Hooray! Two of Michael's friends are coming to stay with us until Sunday. I've been to the library and have stocked up on things to keep me busy while they're in here playing video games, filling the air with sounds of gunfire, boy giggles, and bodily noises.

Slow Cooking

Pin It Now!
I'm in love.

With my slow cooker!

We received it as a shower gift from Michael's grandmother. That was back in late March. I finally used it on Monday. For our one month anniversary dinner, I made meatball subs. They were delicious! It was so nice to put dinner on in the morning and to have it done when we were ready to eat dinner. It was like I didn't even cook!

I am sold. If I could make every single meal in the slow cooker, I would!

Our slow cooker is great. It's the Hamilton Beach Stay or Go slow cooker. It has a special lid with locks on it so that it can safely travel in the car and not spill. It'll come in handy at the holidays when we need to take a dish to dinners.

I am open to recommendations for slow cooker recipes!

What's in a Name?

Pin It Now!
My first name is hyphenated. All through my life, people have had a difficult time figuring out how to say my name. I blame the hyphen. Two simple names joined together by a hyphen shouldn't be that hard to say. I guess the hyphen throws all Phonics skills out the window. Growing up, it hurt my feelings that people I saw on a regular basis were still incapable of properly pronouncing my name. Part of me even wished that I had a "regular" name.
Now that I'm older, I really love my name. It's unique. If I'm in a large group of people and someone shouts my name, I know that they probably aren't looking for someone else.
Fast forward to my trip to the Social Security office. After my painful wait (see a few posts back to read about my experience), I finally got up to the window. The woman began to put in all of my information in order to get my last name changed. All of a sudden, she looks at me and tells me that she can't put in the hyphen.
No hyphen?
I was crushed. The hyphen had been part of my name for twenty-two and one-half years. When she told me it wouldn't allow her to type it, I got nervous. Was my new social security card going to come without the hyphen? It certainly sounded like it was. For the next two weeks I thought about it a lot. If there were no hyphen on my card, the license bureau wouldn't put a hyphen on my new driver's license. I was going to systematically lose my hyphen. It would be like losing part of my self.
After just under two weeks of waiting, my new social security card came in the mail yesterday. On the address section, it showed my name without a hyphen. I was definitely bummed and hesitant about opening it. Not having my name hyphenated on my social security card didn't change who I was inside, but that tiny line has been a pretty big part of my life. I slowly opened the envelope and saw my new card.
There was a hyphen!
The people at the main social security office obviously have brain capacities far superior to the people at our local office. They saw that my paperwork requested that only my last name be changed, not my first. Also, I've had this social security number for more than two decades now, so it was clearly on file with a hyphen. They were nice enough to hyphenate my name for me. I was thrilled to see that little line!
Yes, I know you think it's stupid to get all worked up about a blip of punctuation, but it's part of my name! You can't understand unless your own name has something more than the regular alphabet in it!

My Addictions

Pin It Now!
Everyone has addictions.
We call them hobbies.
No matter what you call them, they are activities that take up more time in one sitting than we anticipate. My lack of blogging as of late has been due to such activities. Here are my big time-wasters:
Knitting -- I haven't done as much of it as I have in the past, but I found my needles and a ball of yarn the other day. I am great at making scarves, so if you want one, let me know!
Quilting -- I love making quilts! I made my last one at the end of May for my nephew, Adrian. I'm planning on starting another one very soon. If I do, I'll try to post pictures!
Now onto the big ones...
The Sims -- Not the new one. This game is amazing! I loooooove designing houses and furnishing them. It helps that long ago I found the code to get money, because 20,000 Simoleons is not enough!
Super Paper Mario -- Oh my goodness. We just got this game and I cannot stop playing it! I loved Super Mario World for SNES and this is quite similar. If you have a Wii, I definitely recommend adding this game to your collection!

Moving!

Pin It Now!
Michael is in a rotational program for the first year and a half of his employment. During this time, he will work at different facilities doing different jobs. It's a good way for him to experience different types of engineering and will give him a better idea as to what he wants to do long-term.
Today, Michael received his work assignments for the next year and a half.
We will be living here in Illinois until March 2009. We will be Missourians again after that, but only until June 2009. After that, it's back to Illinois for his last rotation, which ends December 31, 2009. Following his last rotation, we will come back to our current location, where we will remain for at least three years.
So if anyone wants to plan a trip to Illinois, we would love to have you as our guest!

It's Official!

Pin It Now!
I am officially Marie-Etta C-----s!
I ventured out to the local social security office yesterday with my arms full of the necessary paperwork. When I arrived, the security guard instructed me to take a number. I pulled #2. They immediately called #91. I had a wait ahead of me, depending on how many people were calling numbers.
A few minutes after I sat down, the 50-something woman in front of me turned around and began talking to me. I have no problem talking to strangers. However, I prefer to keep the conversation generic and polite. This woman was clearly off her rocker. She began talking about how her boyfriend tried to give her his first wife's engagement ring. She continued to spew her crazy all over what could have been a nice morning. They had decided to get married back in February, but he hadn't purchased her a ring (I should mention that she asked him to marry her). She said she had given him a deadline (though he didn't know) to buy her a ring and it was yesterday. She was done. She also hated that no one had congratulated them when they decided to get married.
In my mind, I begged the social security gods to call her number. Once they did, I was able to relax until they called my number.
In two weeks I'll have my new social security card!

Haircut!

Pin It Now!
I got my post-wedding haircut last Thursday! Check out the wedding photos below to see how long it was. It was curly for the wedding, so just imagine how long it was before it was fixed! I really love my new haircut. It was done by Heather, who also did my hair for the wedding. I have the worst time finding someone that I trust with my hair, and when I finally do, she lives all the way in Missouri! I guess we'll have to time our visits so that we go when I am in need of a trim.

Happy Birthday!

Happy birthday to my wonderful dad!

His birthday happens to be the day after America's birthday. Every year, the two of them celebrate together with large fireworks displays. Not a bad party, if you ask me!
